Man Rescued The Dog Trapped For Days In Underground Well After Hearing Barks

Sometimes, even the most heroic animals need a little help themselves. A stray dog in Longview, Texas, found itself trapped in a 12-foot-deep well beneath a renter’s home, and it was up to a local hero to rescue it.

A Surprising Discovery

On February 24, a renter in Longview heard faint barks echoing beneath his floorboards. Initially thinking the sound came from outside, he soon realized the barking was coming from under the house. Alarmed, he called the authorities to investigate.

Jenna George, the executive director of the Longview Animal Care and Adoption Center, explained, “He realized it wasn’t coming from outside; it was actually coming from below.”

The Rescue Mission Begins

Animal control officer Bobby Jumper responded to the call, arriving at the home to assess the situation. After investigating, he discovered the source of the barking – a dog trapped in an old well beneath the house. Shocked by the discovery, Jumper, who had been in animal control for over seven years, said, “That’s the first time I’ve run into something like this.”

When Jumper spotted the dog at the bottom of the well, it stopped barking and wagged its tail, showing relief at seeing someone who could help.

A Team Effort

Jumper called in backup, including the Longview Fire Department. Together, they worked tirelessly, using makeshift slings and various tools to lift the dog from the well. The rescue took three hours, and at one point, the team considered ripping up the floorboards to reach the dog. Fortunately, they managed to rescue the pup without causing any damage to the home.

Safe and Sound

Once freed, the dog was fed and hydrated. He quickly devoured the food and water provided, showing signs of being trapped for days without access to either. The dog, a short and stocky Basset hound mix, was taken to a local vet. Although he had a few minor injuries, including cuts and an inflamed ear, he was overall in good health.

New Beginnings

The dog was named Timmy after the boy who frequently fell down wells in the classic TV show Lassie. Despite interest from a firefighter, Timmy wasn’t fond of the firefighter’s cats. However, soon after, a local adopter saw a post about Timmy on Facebook and offered him a loving home.

“Timmy is such a love bug,” said George. “We’re glad to have had such a happy ending.” Timmy was adopted on February 27, ensuring a bright future for the lucky dog.

The Longview Animal Care and Adoption Center praised everyone involved in the rescue, sharing their gratitude on social media, saying, “It’s a true reminder of the incredible bond between humans and animals and how a community comes together in times of need!”
