What Is Daylight-Saving Time?

Every year, clocks are pushed forward one hour in spring and pushed back in fall. Originally introduced during World War I to save energy, DST is still practiced in many parts of the world, including most of the United States. However, it’s not observed in Hawaii or Arizona due to their consistent daylight patterns.

Health Risks Linked to DST

While DST might seem harmless, studies show it disrupts our body’s internal clock, known as the circadian rhythm. The shift causes sleep deprivation, which can have serious health consequences.

  1. Heart Attacks and Strokes: Research shows a 24% increase in heart attacks the day after DST starts in spring. Similarly, strokes spike in the days following the clock change. These health risks are likely due to disturbed sleep patterns and stress.
  2. Car Accidents: DST also leads to a rise in car accidents. A study found a 6% increase in crashes the week after the time change, largely due to sleep deprivation and reduced visibility.
  3. Disrupted Hormones: Our bodies rely on sunlight to regulate hormones. DST forces us to wake up earlier, disturbing our natural hormone production, which may contribute to obesity, diabetes, and mood disorders.

A Growing Debate

With the rising concerns, many states are debating whether to stick with DST or move to permanent standard time. Some experts argue that permanent standard time is healthier for our bodies and minds, calling for an end to the annual clock-changing ritual.

In short, while the longer days of DST might seem appealing, the health risks make many experts question its benefits.
